Abstract

(Tools for Performance-Based Fire Design of RC Structures)

The EuroCode 2 was the first code to allow analytical fire studies. In Canada, objective statements were first introduced in the 2005 National Building Code of Canada. In the USA, Performance Based Design (PBD) of structures exposed to fire is being covered in many documents. Appendix E of the 2016 ASCE 7 is expected to define fire loads for different structures. Engineers need to develop the necessary skills and possess the right analytical tools to adapt to these new changes.

During this presentation, a simplified method to analyze reinforced concrete frames exposed to fire will be explained. The method accounts for the effects of thermal deformations using equivalent thermal loads. The reduced material properties are reflected in the axial and flexural stiffnesses. Tools to evaluate the safety of the frame members considering flexural, axial and shear actions are then presented. The presented tools and methods are based on standard fire exposure, and, thus correlate to the existing perspective design requirements. They are in the process of being updated to be valid for natural fire curves.
